知音创办于 1985 年 1 月，地处琴台故地、黄鹤之乡江城武汉。 2006 年 8 月，经中宣部同意、新闻出版总署批准，成立国有独资、企业性质的“知音传媒集团”。
知音坚持科学的发展观，注重走内涵式、规模化发展道路，通过品牌延伸，发掘多元产业的资源优势，产业得到迅速发展，现总资产达 6.86 亿元、净资产 4.55 亿元，2007年实现经营收入3.28亿元、利税 1.4 亿元、净利润7601 万元。
知音传媒集团下属7 种期刊（月发行总量达 800 万份）、 2 份子报、 4 个子公司、 1 个网站、 1 所学院，形成了以《知音》杂志为核心的期刊出版、广告经营、书刊发行、印刷制版、物业开发、网络媒体、动漫制作、高等职业教育等多元产业构成的产业格局。
品牌杂志《知音》（旬刊）现月发行量达 636 万份，居世界综合性期刊最新排名第五位、全国各类杂志排名第二位。《知音》曾多次被评为全国读者最喜爱的十大名刊、双十佳期刊、中国期刊方阵“双高期刊”，三次荣获中国期刊最高奖 —— 全国优秀社科期刊奖和国家期刊奖，连续三届被评为“湖北省著名商标”。

There was a yellow crane flying away through the white clouds and an old legend retelling two men from different classes met once as bosom friends and their tale remained forever at Qintai. The journal Bosom Friend was originated in Wuhan , a riverside city which is the hometown of yellow crane and the former location of Qintai in January 1985. Approved by Propaganda Department of the CPC Central Committee and General Administration of Press and Publication in August 2006, Bosom Friend Media Group was established as a state-owned and sole ownership enterprise.

A industry pattern of multi-industry structure is formed with advertisement marketing, distribution of books and periodicals, print and plate-making, real estate development, net work media, cartoon manufacture and higher vocational education, and based on Journal Bosom Friend 's periodical publication as a core.
The brand journal Bosom Friend ( published every ten days) is now issued 6.3 million copies, ranking fifth in the world’s general periodicals and second in all sorts of national magazines.
